Give a warm welcome to today's guest poster, my dear friend and Fountains of Carrots partner in crime Christy Isinger! Like all beautiful, mysterious, and true things in life marriage is a thing that never fails to disappoint in providing surprisingly new and interesting revelations. And I'm not just talking about my own marriage. Lately I keep seeing a common trait of marriage appearing … [Read more...]
This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 158
This girl, y'all. If I had the energy she has in her little finger, my house would be so sparkling clean. It's been awhile since I shared a little Carrots fam update on the blog, so here. we. go. I figured we might as well get some homeschool in because it's too dang hot to play outside when you're not in the pool. So I've been reading aloud from a Greek mythology book and The Jungle … [Read more...]
Why I Love the Whole30 (Even though I’ve never finished one)
Confession time. I’ve never made it through an entire Whole30. I’ve tried four times and haven’t ever made it to day 30. The first three times I had an excuse. I was still nursing my youngest and cutting out grains made my supply tank and I dropped weight too quickly. But this last time I wasn’t breastfeeding, I just have terrible self-control. I’m great at planning the meals and I even find … [Read more...]
Hospitality With No Flushing Toilets: What I’ve Learned
Having people over has always been our thing. Daniel loves to cook and I love to talk, so hosting friends for dinner has been part of our family culture ever since we tied the knot. And after having kids, hospitality became the only way we were going to see our friends because kids have early bedtimes and babysitting is expensive. I firmly believe that other than the Mass, there’s nothing that … [Read more...]
If I Could Cast Austen’s Mansfield Park…
I'm re-re-re-re-reading Mansfield Park right now. I've written before about how it's Austen's underrated novel and that we don't love Fanny Price as she deserves to be loved. What I find terribly disappointing that there isn't a decent film version of Mansfield Park. Granted, the 2007 Masterpiece Theatre version was tolerable, I suppose, but the casting was just not right. Haley Atwell as Mary … [Read more...]
Is Your Favorite Saint a Gryffindor? The Definitive Guide to Sorting the Saints
Ever wonder whether your patron saint is a Gryffindor or a Hufflepuff? I didn’t start to consider it until last week when my friend Haley over at Home to Catholicism brought up sorting saints into Hogwarts houses on Twitter (she’s @bakeorbake over there, folks). But then I couldn't STOP thinking about it, crowdsourced my queries to Facebook, and ended up with the best thread ever. Granted, I’m … [Read more...]
Good Music Monday: June 2016 Edition (and a Smoothie Recipe)
Welcome back to Good Music Monday at Carrots! Here’s a Spotify playlist just for you to enjoy on this hot June Monday (it's getting HOT this week in Waco) for whatever your day holds. My big kids are at day camp, so it's just me and Gwen hanging out. I'm hoping to get some work done since the big kids are busy at camp, but everyone knows that a lone three-year-old is probably the worst possible … [Read more...]
Friday Fashion Frivolity: Home Run Edition
Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch. So here’s the drill. I share a new box of Stitch Fix items, tell ya my thoughts, get my husband Daniel’s take (which is really the only reason you're reading this, right?), and share what I kept and what I sent back. (I’m not gonna go into the … [Read more...]
Tim Burton’s Big Fish, Me Before You, and the Terrible Power of Story
Tim Burton’s film Big Fish, based on the novel by Daniel Wallace, is one of my top ten favorites of all time. I recently shared it with my kids who love everything Burton. Their favorite Christmas movie is The Nightmare Before Christmas which means I’m either really rocking this parenting thing or I’m raising warped little cynics. But I love Big Fish above all others. It has all the quirky, … [Read more...]
This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 157 (Gwen’s Birthday!)
A TWM on a THURSDAY, you ask? I know. What are things coming to! But I didn't do one last Friday because we were all sick AND prepping for the 10th anniversary party of my dreams and Gwen's 3rd birthday. So, mea culpa. I was overwhelmed, emotional, and down and out with a cold (it was a super fun week to be around me!). So here we are. Almost a week late. Ta da! After a week of being stuck … [Read more...]
