Benjamin and I have been trying to spend lots of time outside now that the weather is not as hot, the humidity is lower, and the mosquitos have mostly disappeared. I'm a bundle of anxiety about mosquito-borne illnesses since we've had a couple of deaths from encephalitis in the area this summer and lathering Benjamin up with Burt's Bee's bug repellant gives him a weird herbal smell all day that … [Read more...]
Our House, Part I: Benjamin’s Room and Benjamin, the Artist
Folks have been demanding pictures of our house. We bought a precious house built in the '40s in June and we are loving having our very own place. Now that I'm done with my classes I am actually getting some house things done, like unpacking us, which is very exciting and we're almost done with painting. I've taken pictures of Little Bear's room which was a despicable peachy vomit color. We … [Read more...]
August Reads
I’m currently enjoying two books. One is Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, a medieval mystery. Eco’s enjoyment of words and language translates beautifully and it is delightful. I love anything medieval, so something so well-written and historically rich is a treat. I’m trying to read a nonfiction for every fiction I read which is proving difficult but I am loving Wendell Berry’s … [Read more...]
Making Playdough
This morning, Benjamin and I made homemade playdough from my mom's recipe. He was a big help. We made some bad decisions: Throwing caution to the wind, Benjamin decided to "taste it." He explained that it was "not very good." Mama thought it would be a good idea to use all natural food coloring made of hibiscus and beet extract. This did not turn out to be a good idea. The stuff smelled … [Read more...]
Hello, again
Since my last post in April: We moved across the country from beloved Texas to beloved North Florida where both of our families live. I started grad school in Art History, with a concentration in medieval art and got to take a class on medieval barbarian art, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Picts, Celts. Lovely. We bought a wonderful little house built in the ‘40s with wood floors, a … [Read more...]
Lamb for Easter
We ate lamb for Easter. But not these lambs, Katherine, if that makes you feel any better. These five little guys are still too little. Aren't they sweet? Our house in the country is now surrounded by fields of wildflowers. Texas has donned its spring finery. I'll have to take pictures of some of the fields of orange Indian Paintbrushes and purple Bluebonnets. On Easter morning, Little … [Read more...]
Little Fluffy White Lambs
So, I lied. I said I would post pictures of our new little fluffy baby lamb on Saturday. I didn’t. Oops. The story: As you may know, my husband bought 4 young St. Croix sheep several months ago, one ram and three ewes. I named the ewes Madame Rosmerta, Bathilda Bagshot, and Hepsibah Smith. The ram is the one with the mane. We were hoping for some spring lambs but hadn’t seen the … [Read more...]
Being at Home
I love being at home with our little bear. After working 40 hours a week during his first year of life, being able to stay at home with him every day is blissful. I go into town maybe three times a week because there is too much fun to be had playing at our house. We read book after book and build with blocks and generally make a huge mess. It is a little bit exhausting, just as working is, but I … [Read more...]
Cloth Baby Wipes: An Attempt at Green, Frugal Living
My lovely friend and housemate Ellie gave me a baby gift of adorable jungle print cloth baby wipes made by her good friend Lindy. See how cute they are? Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to get started with them, yet. (Yes, I do know that my son is now a toddler and this is pathetic, but I have a valid excuse!) Until now, I have been working full-time at a local University doing … [Read more...]
