Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch.
So here’s the drill. I share a new box of Stitch Fix items, tell ya my thoughts, get my family’s takes (which is really the only reason you’re reading this, right?), and share what I kept and what I sent back.
(I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix in this post, but if you want to know more you can check out whether Stitch Fix is worth it. Here’s the basics: five items chosen just for you by your stylist arrive in a box to your doorstep. You try ‘em on and send back what you don’t want.)
So I turned 31 yesterday! That’s right, I share a birthday with Our Lady AND Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
I started out the day podcasting and then for breakfast we walked up to the little Mexican restaurant three blocks away where they gave me free Tres Leches cake. #tacotrucksoneverycorner
Next up Benjamin went to the store to buy me a birthday balloon and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with his own money (oh my heart!) and then we went to the historic movie theatre downtown because it was showing Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for free (RIP Gene Wilder) and we ate a greasy lunch there. We followed that up with a lovely late afternoon nap and it was one of my favorite birthdays ever. I may have worn two of my Stitch Fix pieces from my latest box for my birthday. Indeed I did.
So fun! See Benjamin’s sweet face? He agreed to be my photographer this time when we were still living at the farm (moving has made me a leeeeeetle behind with the ol’ blog). And Gwen (age 3) joined him for the takes.
Bless his heart. I had already packed the camera so he took all the photos on my phone so MY APOLOGIES. We are up to our ears in boxes and hanging on by a thread.
Anyhow….here goes:
Top: Stitch Fix, , Jeans: Stitch Fix , Shoes: Second-hand from ThredUp (not that you can see them, but…just FYI)
Item #1: White Sleeveless Top (I can’t find where I wrote down the brand and style because….moving. Mea culpa.) Love this top. It looks just like something I would pick out and perfect for Texas summer. But it’s white which is dangerous with a three-year-old in the house who likes to use me as her napkin.
I was itching to keep this one, but there were other items in this fix I loved more and I’m not hurting for tops right now so….back it went with a sob.
Gwen’s Take: “This is a white shirt. It’s for girls. Not for boys. Daddy can’t wear this. It’s too pretty.”
Top: Stitch Fix, , Skirt: Stitch Fix , Shoes: Second-hand from ThredUp
Items #2: Blue Patterned Skirt. I asked my stylist for a skirt in this fix and I really liked the FIT of this one. But I wasn’t in love with the pattern. It looked a little too much like Hawaiian flowers and we saw enough of those in the late 90s AMIRITE?!
Flattering cut, but I’m not a big pattern kind of gal. Just not quite my thing. I should probably ask for a skirt in a neutral color, no pattern.
Benjamin’s Take: “’I really like this outfit. I can’t explain it.”
Dress: Stitch Fix , Shoes: Used from ThredUp,
Item #3: Black Dress with Shoulder Cut Outs. Well, well, well. Let me say this: THIS ONE WAS NOT MY STYLIST’S FAULT. I saw this dress on the SF Instagram and thought, YES! That’s SO ME. I have to have it in my next fit and then I’ll wear it EVERY DAY. But…..ahem….when I put it on I realized I should probably leave things to the professionals because what was I thinking? What is happening with this dress? Maybe my stylist tried to give me my heart’s desire to show me that I should never try to pick out my own clothes ever again. So, not her fault. I asked her for THIS DRESS.
Close up. I don’t know why my skin is so yellow. Let’s just move on, shall we?!
Benjamin’s Take: “I think the arms are pretty cool.”
Top: J. Crew, Second-hand from ThredUp, , Shorts: Stitch Fix , Shoes: Second-hand from ThredUp
Item #4: Jayme Short by Kut from the Kloth. Ah. That’s better. Remember last time when I really liked those black shorts but they were uncomfortably snug around my I’m-not-in-my-20s-anymore thighs? Well, my stylist remembered and sent me these which are similar but far more forgiving and comfortable. I’ve been wearing them constantly.
I really like flowy tops and they’re perfect to pair them with because they’re not bulky. So definite keeper.
Gwen’s Take: “Those are good boots. Mama could wear those in the grass.”
Top: J. Crew, Second-hand from ThredUp, Kimono: Stitch Fix, Shorts: Stitch Fix , Shoes: Second-hand from ThredUp
Item #5:Bellini Kimono by Papermoon for Stitch Fix. Y’all. I have been trying to find a kimono I love for YEARS. But every time I try one on I look like a 70 year old woman vacationing in Miami. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I’m just not there yet. But I LOVE this one. I wear it at least once a week. Especially with these black shorts or some black leggings. The back is slightly longer than the front which is great when you’re wearing snug leggings and want to make sure there’s good bum coverage. I’m all about leggings as pants, but I’m also all about bum coverage.
YES. So that’s what I wore for my birthday because it’s my favorite outfit right now.
Benjamin’s Take: “I like the Kimono. I like that it’s a see-through thing.”
And can we talk about these boots?! I had some credit with ThredUp and saw these and couldn’t say no. Now I’m wondering if I’m ok being the woman who always wears pea green booties because I plan to wear them all fall and winter. No breaks.
Until next time, and Happy Friday, friends!

Happy Birthday!
I love your kiddos comments. Poor Daniel — no pretty for him. And if you ever get cast as the daughter in Beetlejuice, I think that black dress would be perfect!
Haley says
Lol! And thanks for the birthday wishes, Maryalene 🙂

Those boots have serious hobbit street cred. As I don’t live in Texas, I would wear them all through the summer as well. =) Good call on the dress. I saw the picture and before I read any takes I turned to my husband and said it made you look like a Kardashian.
Haley says
Ha! Yes, boots are pretty much a no until the cool weather arrives because heatstroke is real, lol.
Hannah says
I actually love that skirt! Sad you didn’t like the pattern. It looked perfect with that top. Can’t keep it all though, I guess. 🙂 And those boots are awesome. What a find. Happy Birthday!
