Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch.
So here’s the drill. I share a new box of Stitch Fix items, tell ya my thoughts, get my husband Daniel’s take, and tell you what I kept and what I sent back.
(I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix here, but if you want to know more you can check out my posts about whether Stitch Fix is worth it, how it compares to other styling services like Golden Tote. Here’s all you need to know: five items chosen just for you by your stylist arrive in a box to your doorstep. You try ‘em on and send back what you don’t want.)
Enter the photographer! What can I say? Fashion is his passion. (False. He’s just very obliging.) Ok, Item #1 here we go:
Shirt: Stitch Fix, Skirt: Stitch Fix, Sandals: Target
Item #1: Emi Demin Cargo Skirt: Liverpool. Now that summer is here and I finally have some shorts that I don’t hate, I’ve been focusing on adding some more versatile skirts to my wardrobe.
And I’m really pleased with this one. You can tuck in a shirt or not and it works. Super comfy, sturdy, and versatile. Keepin’ it!
Daniel’s Take: “You know what this outfit needs? A jean jacket. Man, I need a jean jacket too. Can that be our thing as a family?”
Dress: Stitch Fix, Sandals: Target
Item #2: Rosalie Chambray Dress: Crescent. Or as I like to call it, the Kimmy Schmidt dress. Just no. I’m already a homeschool mom who drives a minivan. You can’t make me wear frumpy denim dresses, too, Stitch Fix!
Get. me. out. of. this. dress. In addition to the denim-y dress vibe, the fit is also weird. Not doing me any favors. Be gone.
Daniel’s Take: “Never mind. That’s too much denim. If we start our own commune, this can be what the women wear. With white tennis shoes.”
Skirt: Stitch Fix, Shirt: Target, gifted, Sandals: Target
Item #3: Melisa Mixed Geo Print Pencil Skirt: Renee C. Ok, so not frumpy like Item #2 but the pendulum has swung a little too far in the other direction. I mean…I AM a minivan-driving homeschool mom not….Miley Cyrus or whoever the kids are listening to these days. Am I being overly dramatic?
I’m just not super short skirt kinda gal. And I don’t love geometric patterns like this.
Snug on the bum is not my favorite style. Back you go, pencil skirt.
Daniel’s Take: “You should get this in case we need to go to clubbing.”
Vest: Stitch Fix, Shirt: Stitch Fix, Pants: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Target
Item #4: Jahana Cargo Vest: Market and Spruce. Um. What is happening here?
Is this Out of Africa? Under what circumstances would I wear this? Not if it’s cold because it doesn’t have arms. But not if it’s hot because…then it would be hot.
Do I blend in with the forest (ahem, backyard)?
How bout now? Ok. Enough insanity. Go home, vest, you’re……a weird safari-inspired vest.
Daniel’s Take: “It looks like you’re either about to storm the beaches of Normandy or vandalize a building.”
Top: Stitch Fix, Jeans: Old Navy, Shoes: Target
Item #5: Rylin Pintuck Detailed Silk Blouse: Pale. I love this shirt. And wrestled with myself over whether to keep it or not.
Daniel’s Take: “I like it. Looks comfortable. I might want one.”
Seriously such a beautiful shirt. But after asking for advice on the Carrots FB page, I realized that I really am not up for carefully and meticulously washing a silk blouse….with three small kids….on a farm. And it was a leeeeeetle bit pricier than I usually am willing to pay. So I sent it back. No regrets, but man….I need a simple black top. Just not silk.
Oh and tangent, this is the necklace that Daniel gave me for our 9th anniversary last month. Little map of Tallahassee. We’ll miss you, Florida!
Ok, back to the shirt. I also love that the shirt was long enough that I could wear my cats in space leggings as pants.
Don’t judge me.
And that’s it, folks!
What did you think of this fix? Should I have kept the black top? Should I go on a safari? Should I work cats in space into every fashion post? Let’s chat in the comments so I can procrastinate on packing up our house for the move.

Beth (A Moms Life) says
Oh my goodness! Your stylist must have been drinking with this fix. I do love the black shirt, but silk?? Ain’t nobody got time for that! And I laughed out loud at the Kimmy Schmidt line. We just started watching it on Netflix and I think it has potential!
Haley says
lol!
Melissa H-K says
Seriously on that black top. And what is going on with Stitch Fix? Are they all single and childless or something? Do they not understand about why moms don’t want anything that has to be pampered? My daughter Rosie (of rosie-ablogformymom.blogspot.com fame) *just* got a Stitch Fix box with a beautiful but handwash only top. And it was too expensive, too. So what the heck is going on in StitchFixland?
Sarah @ Two Os Plus More says
Oh my gosh. I am CRACKING up literally out loud at the safari vest. You pretty much reached Kelly Mantoan post hilarious rated by how extreme my response was.
So so funny and although it does look kinda cute on you, since you’re not a carefree woman walking around NYC just waiting for the Humans of NY photographer to zone in you, yeah, so impractical.
Haley says
High praise! and the HONY reference, haha. I feel like a NYC photographer could def pull off the vest. Little pockets for….stuff. Camera stuff.
Abbey @ Surviving Our Blessings says
I’m with Sarah on this. The safari vest picture with the hood up made me snort my coffee. In a good way.
The black top is so lovely, but I hear you on the washing instructions. Ugh.
heather says
As always, Daniel’s comments are the best! You could tooootally go storm some beaches in Texas. I dont think Galveston has been stormed in a while! 😉
These outfits dont really make much sense though. Maybe you got sent ‘the bottom of the bag’ by mistake? How did they think these things would appeal to the same person?
Haley says
Agreed! Clearly not picked out for the same person, haha.
Jen @ Into Your Will says
Ahh, I’m DYING over the safari one. Y’all are so much fun! And I love the denim skirt!
Haley says
Haha, thanks, Jen!
Meghan says
Ahaha: “I’m already a homeschool mom who drives a minivan. You can’t make me wear frumpy denim dresses, too, Stitch Fix!” Hilarious. I just snorted into my coffee!
Stitch Fix has been SO hit or miss for me lately. Do you have a Pinterest style board that your stylist can see? I’ve found that’s helped a ton so that they can see that I really don’t favor short, curve hugging things (I’m 23 so they assume I do). Hopefully you’ll be more successful next time!
Haley says
I KIND of have a Pinterest board but I made it ages ago and I never update it. :/ Maybe I should do that. I’ve had a series of really great fixes but this one wasn’t really my usual, haha
Kelsey @ Anwering the Call says
I’ll have to agree with the drinking stylist comment! One of the more random fixes I’ve seen, but even if you would have kept the safari themed not-summer-not-winter vest, you could have totally rocked it, fyi 🙂
Elizabeth says
Daniel was really on a roll this time! 😀 I loved the black blouse, but definitely am with you on the silk. I have that problem with my current wardrobe. Too many pretty things that just don’t mesh with my life, and instead of being realistic I continue to live in hope. ONE DAY, I will no longer have small people using my clothing for napkins and handkerchiefs, and I will be able to wear nice clothes again!!! Meanwhile, well, jeans and t-shirts are my friend. 🙁 Sort of.
Haley says
Totally! I recently changed by Stitch Fix preferences to request more casual pieces but I really am pretty much set for date nights and Mass but everyday casual stuff is really what I wear most days.
Mary @ Better Than Eden says
But you could storm beaches AND not have to worry about pit stains!!! Why WOULDN’T you want that vest?!?!
Haley says
Haha!
Katarina says
I would have totally kept the silk blouse and i just love the denim dress 😀 looks like we had a totally different taste on this Fix! Love fashion at Carrots <3
Haley says
So glad you’re liking the fashion posts, Katarina!
Tara says
Oooh can we talk really quick about the waistband on that denim skirt? Is it elastic? If so, OHMIGOSH that is amazing.
I think the intended use of that vest is pretty much nailed in that second picture. Hoods up baby!
Haley says
YES! It’s elastic and I LOVE it.
Jennifer says
I actually love that chambray dress and may request it in my next fix! Daniel’s comments about it were cracking me up, especially considering I recently saw a fashion blogger pair a chambray dress with a pair of white Converse. Commune uniforms must be all the rage this season.
Liesl says
I’m so confused by your stylist this time – the Miley skirt and the denim dress and the safari jacket all in one box? Those are for three different people! Did you tell your stylist that you have a split personality or something?!
Good decision on the top. It’s super cute but an everyday shirt is not worth the headache of careful washing.
Vanessa says
I would have kept the black silk blouse and the geometric patterned skirt and put it together. You looked great in the skirt regardless of it being a little too short for my taste too. That denim dress was too much though! I’m with you- too Kimmy Schmidt. 🙂
Marie says
Definitely work the cats in space leggings into every post. Yes.
But I just LOVE how you hated the patterned pencil skirt (totally with you there too!) and then put on your cats in space leggings
Haley says
Cats in space > pencil skirt. lol!
Rosie says
Oof that vest!!! Yikes…
I totally think that denim dress works – paired with a wide belt & boots I think you would totally rock it. But you and I have very different styles 😉
Haley says
I think if it was any other color….even another demin wash….but…i…just….can’t. Maybe if you styled it for me 🙂
Rosie says
Okay yeah I totally get that. Looking back at the picture, it *is* a very “homeschool-y” wash… I had jeans in that color in 1999 and I LOVED them! But these days I probably wouldn’t go for it!
Karen Edmisten says
I think the stylist reads your blog and was sending you some rich editorial material. 🙂
Haley says
LOL, Karen! The comedy gold was totally worth it. She should ask for a raise 😉
Justine Rauch says
Your nicknames for the pieces are my favorite. These seem like pieces someone could put together on Pinterest and look right, but in reality, not so practical. I agree with your pics!
…And your cats in space leggings are the absolute coolest.
Cecilia says
Oh my goodness! I sort of feel bad saying this, but this is almost too funny.
Did you have a different stylist for this fix than for any of your previous fixes?
Alicia @ Days at La Casa says
bahahaha!! You’re hilarious. The safari vest: seriously??
This post made my own decision pendulum of whether to try stitch fox or not swing in the “maybe not” direction. But I love that because it means you’re giving honest reviews! Thank you!!
And I think that was a good decision on the silk blouse. It’s really adorable and I LOVE the feel of silk but we gotta be practical mamas… Le sigh… 😉
Jean says
You in the denim dress is the CUTEST. For realz. Totally not frumpy at all.
Willow says
Everything – absolutely everything – about this post is solid gold. From the super cute denim skirt (looks great on you, btw!) to the safari vest (go take the Lone Star State by storm) to the pencil skirt, I love it. Daniel’s comments are always the best, too.
And now I have to know: WHERE did you get cats in space leggings!? As a crazy cat lady I feel like my wardrobe is desperately missing these and I need a pair. Please advise!
Morgan D says
Am I the only one who loves the Miley skirt and thinks it looks adorable on you?!
Ginger says
I totally loved the Miley skirt! I think it would be amazing with the black top – but then there’s the whole “3 small children and living on a farm” thing… lol
Emily says
Your “forest” photos made me laugh so hard! I love reading your blog. 🙂
Michele says
Not clothing related, but your hair is growing out so nicely. You look lovely!
Also, um, looooove the Kimmy Schmidt reference.
Hannah says
Totally agree on the hair! =)
LeAnna says
Ok…
1) I have a cats in space blanket. It is pretty awesome. But now you’ve made me realise that I also need leggings!
2) I actually really liked the pencil skirt outfit. Probably not the best for bending over to pick up kids, but great for running errands where you want to look hip & yet styled. Like going to the bank…or a fancy grocery store 😉 the club wear I’m used to seeing is a lot more revealing. (Maybe that says something about Canadian club goers. I don’t know how they don’t all die from hypothermia).
3: Love the black shirt, but you made the right decision. 🙁
Courtney says
The geometric skirt…can the Kelly Bundy fit PLEASE go back out of style? I don’t know a single person who is comfortable in something like that.
Hannah says
That cargo vest though…I died. I was laughing so hard. And seriously?? Silk top?? I totally agree that it looked awesome on you, but like some other commenter said: AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT!
Alana says
I care nothing for fashion but, man, do I love reading your fashion posts. They crack me up!
~Alana
Sarah says
Ok, I’m WAY late to this party, but I totally bought that black shirt this summer (AND it comes in other colors, too!) and the Rack. For…less than $30, for sure. Annnnd…I’ve for sure washed it in the washing machine. Haha I don’t think I ever checked the tag. WHUPS. But it still looks great and is a favorite ;).
