Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans….or leave your couch.
Yesterday Daniel came home early from work to watch Baby Gwen so I could be on Jennifer Fulwiler’s radio show on SiriusXM (I was a little nervous, but she’s such a good interviewer that she made me feel comfortable right away). And then we had a few minutes before the big kids got back from karate so I wrangled Daniel into snapping some photos of my most recent Stitch Fix. I have to admit it wasn’t one of my favorite fixes. I did still keep two items but…well, you’ll see.
(I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix here, but if you want to know more you can check out my posts about whether Stitch Fix is worth it, how it compares to other styling services like Golden Tote.)

Enter the Warrior Princess Gwen.
Ok. The stage is set. On to the clothes…
Top: Stitch Fix, Jeans: Old Navy, Necklace: Stitch Fix, Bag: Connected in Hope
Item #1: Memphis Lace Overlay Knit Shirt: Market & Spruce Yes. I adore lace. It makes me feel like Lady Mary Crawley or the Anne girl. When I first pulled this one out of the box I wasn’t sure it would wow me enough to keep. But then I tried it on. And IT IS THE SOFTEST SHIRT IN THE WORLD. I never want to take it off. It’s now on rotation with the sweater I got in my last fix. I basically just wear these two items until the stink factor makes washing a necessity. Then I put them right back on. Besides. Lace is pretty.
Daniel’s Take: “It’s like you got two shirts on!”
Ready for a cute baby break?
I thought so.
Cardigan: Stitch Fix, Shirt: Stitch Fix, Jeans: Old Navy, Necklace: chloe +isabel, Boots: Clarks
Item #2: Augustina Lace Back Open Cardigan: Pink Martini. Yes, please. I actually really needed a dressy-ish black cardigan and this one is light-weight and perfect for life in Florida. Benjamin, my 5yo, was very insistent that I keep it. He’s like a little Stitch Fix salesman. “WOW! That looks GREAT! You just GOTTA keep it, you just GOTTA! Lemme just cut that tag off for ya.” It’s funny. Unless you’re trying to convince him that you’re not going to keep something. Then he gets very put out. And look. Lace:
Daniel’s Take: “OK but don’t you usually wear a cardigan because you’re cold? Will your back get cold? Will you have to wear TWO cardigans?”
Top: Stitch Fix, Leggings: Stitch Fix
Item #3: Silvio Arrow Print Sleeveless Silk Blouse: 41Hawthorn. Nope. I mean. I don’t HATE it. But it’s flowy in all the wrong places and ends up being really unflattering around the middle. And I thought it was way too pricey. So back you go, blouse.
Daniel’s Take: “I like it! It’s like a fun shirt a cool geometry teacher would wear on the first day of class.”
I just no thank you. Nope, nope, nope. At this point in this little photo shoot, the warrior princess was becoming bored.
Methinks I will ride this overturned wheelbarrow into a world of medieval adventures. Mayhaps, a noble quest. I will lay waste to all dragons and foes. She seemed to say.
Item #4: Kahlo Knit Top: THML. Le sigh. I had high hopes for this one, folks. High hopes. The fabric is super comfy and I love the embroidered detail. And at first glance, it seemed to work. But let’s take a little step back.
Still good, right? But wait for it…
What is going on with the poofy front and the longer sides? It’s actually way worse than it looks in this photo. Sad.
Daniel’s Take: “The top part is great, the red lace part is cool. But then something goes wrong at the bottom… The sides should be reversed with the front and back. I bet I could fix it!”
Is this over yet? Almost, dear heart.
And that’s if for this fix, folks. But wait! Aren’t there usually FIVE items in a box? Yes, indeed. But the 5th item was a pair of black skinny jeans that were…ahem…a tad TOO skinny for this gal. As in, I was pretty sure seams would rip if I tried to zip them up. And I think I pulled a muscle trying to get them on. So…..that’s a no. But, I’ve actually had great luck with pants from Stitch Fix in the pants and this is actually the first pair that hasn’t fit like a glove. The gal that usually styles my fixes didn’t do this one, I’m hoping she’s just on vacation or something because I loooooooove her.
But anyhow, since we don’t have another SF item, I gotta show you these boots I got for Christmas.
They remind me of Laura Ingalls Wilder and they seem to little house on the prairie their way into every outfit these days.
Oh, and thanks for not mentioning the horrible in-betweenness of my hair right now. I’m growing it out and I hate it and blerg, grow faster.
I’m thinking about doing a capsule wardrobe post, because I recently went through my closet and realized that I don’t need to create a capsule wardrobe because I really only have a few items per season and already have a capsule wardrobe. So all I would have to do is take a million photos of clothes on hangers in my house’s super bad lighting (upon further consideration, maybe that doesn’t sound very appealing.) Maybe someday.
Happy Friday, friends! This weekend my great planning skills contributed to hosting a friend’s baby shower and throwing Benjamin’s 6th birthday party on the same day. But don’t worry. Different locations. Because I really think things through. Excuse me while I go make a million scones and cupcakes whilst getting all teary-eyed at how big my first baby has gotten. He’s a giant! How did this happen?
At least my warrior princess is still small and snuggly, right?

Love the first top! I, too, love lace! I think you made the right decision on the items you sent back – I don’t get it with the weird flowy at the bottom trend. I have hips that do not lie, and shirts like that just… ugh. I kinda wish I could try Stitch Fix, but last I checked, they didn’t carry past a size 14, and I am borderline 🙁 I’d hate to give it a try and stuff just not fit at all, and have to send it all back.
Haley says
I think the really flowy tops also can be unflattering for those of us that are kinda busty for our frame. They make me look like I don’t have a waist which is….a bummer, haha. Totally get that about the sizing. Especially since there’s a styling fee if you don’t end up buying any of the items, that would be frustrating!
Kristen says
Interestingly enough, coming from the other side of the boob-size spectrum (I’m fairly tall and fairly not-busty)…I always feel like the really flowy tops just make me look like I have no shape, and I have always assumed that the problem is the lack of boobage.
Like if something held the shirt out a bit more in front, it would be less tentish.
But apparently that is not the problem?
Maybe big flowy tops just don’t work.

OK, so, I am a SF stylist and love reading the blogs and seeing all the pics etc….2 things:
I read this blog because you’re hilarious and your whole family is gorg!
Also, Liesl, we do have size 16! So yay!

I always love your fashion posts! Let’s be real, I love ALL your posts. I need to check out stitch fix! I recently discovered the wonders of tradesy.com. If you haven’t ever used it, I highly recommend it. I hate buying new clothes but the thrift stores in my small town leave a lot to be desired. On tradesy, it’s like, “shyeah, I’ll buy your $400 boots that you’ve never worn for $20.”
Haley says
Aw thanks, Mia! I haven’t tried Tradesy! I’ve tried Twice and thredUP, but I’ll check it out! 🙂

My oldest’s 5th birthday party is this weekend! Such a great stage for boys, right? I mean they cut tags off your clothing and everything. So thoughtful.
And I just have to say, Gwen is the cutest. You CLEARLY were not thinking of those of us with grave reasons to avoid pregnancy right now when you posted those 😉
Haley says
5 has been so great. I’m looking forward to 6, too 🙂 Haha! I can’t help the Gwen cuteness! Hang in there! <3

Girlfriend, I want details on the boots. I NEED those same boots. I’m 4’10”, and I do not wear flat shoes. But boots with this kind of detail are always low-heeled. Please, please, please hook me up with the deets on this snazzy pair of footwear.
Haley says
These are the ones, Kathy! I wear ’em pretty much every day. Every. Single. Day. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWMSB4S/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AWMSB4S&linkCode=as2&tag=carroformicha-20&linkId=WQIPCVIZT6YS3RXY

I know what you mean about that horrible in-between stage of growing out your hair, but I think yours looks super cute! Just thought you should hear that 😉
Ashley says
I love your fashion blogs! Where did you get your boots from?! I need them…but I’ll get them in brown so you don’t think I’m copying you 😉
Cammie says
I love the idea of the lace back cardigan! So pretty!
And those boots are the best boots I’ve seen in a very long time!
Lew says
You homeschool, so you kind of are a geometry teacher, so maybe you should have kept the pink top. Just kidding, you made the right decision.
renee says
I always love your stitch fix posts! And of course Daniel and Gwen made this one awesome. Yes, that geometry blouse was hideous. Lol. Thanks for letting my broke ass shop with you!
jeni says
these are becoming my favorite posts. Your hair is getting long again!
Haley says
Thanks, Jeni! And I know! But I want it to GROW FASTER. 😉
Haley says
Your reviews are hilarious, I look forward to the next one! I especially love that first lace top.
Haley says
Thanks, Haley! It’s the softest top in the world!
