Every so often, we chat fashion at Carrots. I hope it feels like going shopping with a friend, but not having to try on jeans, or leave your couch.
Today I’m gonna share my latest fix from Stitch Fix, but FIRST I want to share about Twice. My friend Mandi guest posted awhile back about how Twice is a a thrifty alternative to personal styling services like Stitch Fix or Golden Tote, and I was inspired to try it out. I had a little bit of store credit to use up and I really love it.
So, I wrangled Daniel into taking some outfit photos for ya.
glasses c/o Firmoo
As you can see, he just couldn’t wait to get started! Fashion! Online shopping! I can hardly contain myself!….he seemed to say.
And….welcome to the glory of Twice!
Dress: Gap (used from Twice), Boots: Aldo (used from Twice), Jewelry: chloe + isabel
I needed some boots because the last pair I bought were thrifted in Austin, TX 8 years ago and who knows how old they were before I got them. I’ve replaced the heels a couple of times, but now the suede fabric has gaping holes and it’s just Time To Say Goodbye (as Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli would say…somebody PUHLEASE tell me you got that reference). So…new boots! I was worried that I’d order the wrong size since I’ve never bought shoes online before (except for pointe shoes for ballet). And then there’s the added complication of my feet SHRINKING half a size after every pregnancy. What? But ta da! I love ’em.
And yes, you are correct. Those are COFFEE CUPS. It’s like someone said, let me just roll all of your favorite things into one awesome dress that you will wear three times in one week. Welcome to my cool weather momiform, folks. Coffee cups for days.
Me: “I don’t think you’re as excited about this dress as I am!”
Daniel: “I am definitely not as excited about this dress as you are. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I like your dress.”
And this is a close-up of my owl necklace from chloe + isabel just for fellow blogger Cari Donaldson who is terrified of owls. Sorry, Cari, I couldn’t resist. Loooooove you.
K, on to the Stitch Fix! (I’m not gonna go into the details of the personal styling service Stitch Fix here, but if you want to know more you can check out my posts about whether Stitch Fix is worth it, how it compares to other styling services like Golden Tote.)
Top: Stitch Fix, Paints: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Twice
Item #1: Plaid top. So soft, love the grey and the plaid. I could see myself wearing it until…..
Daniel’s Take: “Fashion lumberjack. Also, 90s? I don’t think I really like plaid for women’s clothes.”
Well, in THAT case, I guess it’s not a keeper.
Item #2: Brown corduroy pants. I LOVE these. I kept ’em and I’ve been wearing them on the days that the coffee cup dress is in the wash.
Daniel’s Take: “Yeah. Good pants. Not much else you can say here.”
Sweater: Stitch Fix, Jeans: Stitch Fix, Shoes: Twice
Item #3: Mustard/Stripey Sweater. This one was comfy. And I actually do like the mustard color (referred to as baby poop yellow by my mom), but I’m not a fan of the stripey sleeves. So this was a no.
Daniel’s Take: “I like the colors. But it also reminds me of maybe something a cartoon character would wear. Not in a bad way. Just bold and easy to recognize. Does that make sense?”
Top: Stitch Fix, Pants: Stitch Fix
Item #4: Festive Sweater. Ya know, I like this one. It feels festive and Christmasy and perfect to wear on Thanksgiving Day or something. But it’s part wool and how often will I really wear that in Florida? And seeing photos, those horizontal stripes aren’t doing me any favors so….back it goes.
Daniel’s Take: “It’s like a deconstructed Christmas sweater. Which would be great for one postmodern Christmas party per year.”
Sweater: Clothing Exchange hand-me-down, Pants: Stitch Fix, Boots: Thrifted and falling apart, Sleeveless Cardigan: Stitch Fix
Item #5: Patterned Sleeveless Cardigan Thingy. My SIL has something similar and looks adorable in it. But……so not me. I think I’m allergic to fringe.
I just….wouldn’t ever, ever wear this. Goodbye.
Daniel’s Take: “Like, why don’t you just get a poncho?”
So, all-in-all, pants=fantastic. But the sweaters just didn’t work, so back they went.
And I thought I’d mention that Stitch Fix has Christmas gift cards available, so if you’ve been thinking about Stitch Fix but haven’t taken the plunge, it might be a good thing to put on your Christmas list (I put it on mine!). Also a fun gift for people who enjoy fashion but are tricky to shop for–I’m always terrified of buying clothes for other people.
But for a thriftier online shopping option, I really love Twice. It lacks the fun factor of surprise, but if you just want to spruce up your wardrobe with some nice items at a good price–online consignment is for you. (And you can get $10 credit by signing up through this link–and I’ll get $10 credit, too, so thanks!)
Any thoughts on sweaters, or Stitch Fix vs. Twice? Or how it’s ridiculous that I even OWN boots in Florida? Chat away in the comments, friends!
Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post. But links to Stitch Fix and Golden Tote are affiliate links which means if a sale is made, I will receive a small percentage at no additional cost to you, of course. Links to Twice are referral links.
Laurel says
I REALLY want to get a pair of nice boots but I just can’t shell out the cash for a new pair. May have to look around on Twice. I’m signing up on your link.
You’re a lucky bum snagging those new brown ones! They look fantastic on you!
Haley says
SAME. So expensive! But I didn’t want to make she mistake of buying $20 boots from Target that will peel and look terrible by Christmas. So I just haunted the boots section of Twice until these showed up! I think they ended up being about $20? And originally over $100? So good.
Sarah @ Two Os Plus More says
I love the baby poop sweater. I always try to weigh out how much I LOVE horizontal stripes versus how unflattering they typically are. Sometimes the former wins. The pants are super cute, and I agree, that last one… no.
I don’t think I could ever justify StitchFix just because I don’t even spend that much when I go and try it on first… but maybe if they sent *me* that mustard sweater, it’d all be worth it. Keep finding awesomeness on Twice just never order it. =p
Haley says
Haha! I bet you could request the sweater? Put SF on your Xmas list?
I feel like if I kept the last one I would end up flapping my “wings” and feeling like Snape. At least that’s what I kept thinking about when I tried it on.
I have some Twice credit waiting around for me to find something awesome! But I’m thinking that since I have plenty of clothes right now, maybe I should wait until a new pregnancy when I need some stuff for the in-between stage, ya know?
Elizabeth@SuperSwellTimes says
What’s Daniel’s beef with plaid on women? Plaid is for everyone, okay?!
Haley says
Yeah, Daniel! I also happen to have several plaid items in my wardrobe which I now will have to wear in DEFIANCE of this completely unfair fashion judgment 😉
Adrie | A Little Wife's Happy Life says
1. I actually really love the no-sleeves cardigan thing! But I know what you mean- if you won’t wear it, it’s not worth it.
2. My husband thinks I look best in plaid. All plaid, all the time. If he could pick out outfits for me, I’d wear jeans and a button up flannel shirt every day. Of course, he’s a bit of a pro-lumberjack kind of fellow himself… =)
Haley says
Love that! Funny thing is that Daniel owns a great deal of plaid. Including a kilt. Just SAYIN’. 😉
Becky says
LOVE that coffee cup dress!! SO MUCH.
I also really love the baby poop/stripe sweater. Totally my style; I thought it was super cute on you too (best sweater of them all from this Fix).
The plaid shirt? I like plaid. Plaid on women can be great (Daniel…), but I wasn’t a fan of this one. Loved the plaid and grey combo, but not the style. Maybe if it were a button up…
And yes, as a Prairie-livin’ Canadian I’m always surprised to see pics of you guys in sweaters and boots! But clearly I know nothing of winters in Florida 😉
Looks great, Haley!
Haley says
MOST winter days we are a little ridiculous to wear sweaters and boots, BUT it’s occasionally in the 20s (fahrenheit) or colder and we’re all wimps about it so BOOTS AND SCARVES for days! 😉
Janine says
Just had to say that I get the Time to Say Goodbye reference. 😉
Haley says
haha! I’m so glad! That was our Saturday morning cleaning JAM for years when I was growing up.
Nancy Wang says
I love Daniel’s take on things! I also love Twice, thank you so much for introducing me to it! I haven’t had much luck with my two Stitch Fixes–their stuff is just too expensive. Also, I totally got the Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli reference–I know that song well.
Haley says
Yay for obscure opera/pop album references! Haha.
Shauna says
I got the reference, except I was thinking of the Josh Groban version! Love the coffee cup dress, boots, pants, and mustard shirt. I live in Phoenix, so I understand your hesitation to stock up on boots and sweaters. I was all set to sign up for Stitch Fix after reading your posts..until I decided not to buy any clothes (new or used) for six months. I’m a recovering clothes junkie/shopoholic, and I don’t neeeeed anything right now. Womp womp.
Kathy Biallas says
I saw this comment and knew it was you …
I liked the mustard shirt but I just don’t wear stripes.
Anna says
I heart those coffee cups. You look great in that color!
This may sound silly, but I totally believe that God blessed me this week through Twice. I have been searching all winter (I’m in Michigan. Winter’s been here a while) for a wool coat. I have one that’s warm and grey and drab and one that’s stylish but impractical (white) and a bit small on my post-child bearing self. Both are 7+ years old and I wanted a new one this year. I haven’t found any at the stores that have been what I wanted, and those that came close were $100 or more. I hadn’t had luck finding one on Twice but I decided a week ago to give it one last look before I dropped the $100 and what do you think, I found the perfect one, all of my wishes met in my size and for under $30, which i had in store credit. i love it! God be praised! (He even fulfills my more superficial prayers.)
Haley says
Thanks, Anna! That is awesome about Twice! I needed a coat, too (my last coat was from the Delia’s catalog 10 years ago so…..yeah.) And I found a great one at Twice. Yay! <3
Erin says
I love that by including Daniel’s takes, you’ve made this post fun even for those of us who hate shopping under ANY circumstances. Reluctant shopping companions, unite! Plus, I do love the coffee-cup dress. I’m almost astonished that it even exists, let alone that it found its way to you. God has a plan, folks. Now I’ll just sit back and wait for my giant-margarita-glass dress to materialize.
Haley says
He is hysterical. And margarita-glass dress! It has to exist somewhere, right?! Brilliant.
Rachel Rendall says
I actually think the baby poop sweater with stripes sleeves looks amazing on you!!! The thin stripes makes your arms look so looooong and thin! Totes understand that if you don’t like if, you don’t like it…and won’t wear it , but just wanted to pass on a compliment 🙂
Haley says
Aw, thanks, Rachel! I ended up sending it back and it’s probably for the best since I would hereby always refer to it as the baby poop sweater, haha.
Kathy Biallas says
I own boots in Arizona, but hey, it’s the land of cowboys and the Wild West and all that. Loved the coffee cup dress. I really do like the fashion blogs, so keep ’em coming!
Haley says
Will do, Kathy 😉
Melissa says
I really liked the fringe sweater on you! But I must be a fringe kinda girl. 🙂 I’ll have to check out twice. I’ve bought things on Thred Up for my girls before and loved almost everything. Is Twice better in your opinion? Also, love the boots. Even if you are in Florida.
Haley says
I liked ThredUP, too! I bought some jeans and shoes for Lucy and they were in perfect condition!
Ronni says
Yeah, I was also wondering about Thread Up v. Twice. I’ve purchased from Thread Up before and was pretty happy. Is Twice similar to Thread Up, or are they different somehow? I know they both sell used clothing.
Kaitlin @ More Like Mary says
Why didn’t you give the baby poop sweat to ME?!?!?!? That is so cute! I would have worn it in like……..13 months when I’m skinny again and it’s kinda cold.
Haley says
haha! You’re skinny even when you’re pregnant, babe.
Lindsay says
This post, plus a disastrous trip to the mall, has finally convinced me to give Stitch Fix a try (using your affiliate link, of course). Here goes nothing!
Haley says
I hope it’s awesome, Lindsay! It’s really fun. AND if you have specific things in mind you can check out ThredUP: http://www.thredup.com/r/HUKIDU (that’s my little referral linky). They carry maternity and Twice doesn’t.
Karen Edmisten says
A coffee cup dress? A COFFEE CUP DRESS? Who percolated that idea? I love this person forever.
Daniel’s commentary is spot on (“deconstructed Christmas sweater”…”something a cartoon character would wear. But not in a bad way.” Alarmingly and delightfully accurate.)
Except? I do like plaid. I never wear it, but I like it on other people. So I forgive him the plaid in exchange for the “postmodern Christmas party” comment, which is perfection. Also his “Like, why don’t you just get a poncho?” applies, in various incarnations, to so very many fashions. 🙂
Haley says
“Who percolated that idea?” <--best comment, haha He is a riot! And the plaid thing...it's baffling!
Brittany says
Fun article! I’m a stitch fix stylist! You all can request me & I’ll do my best! Leaves notes, your Pinterest etc so we can get to know your style better!! Xoxo brittany

Haley says
Awesome! Thanks, Brittany 🙂
Cari says
I can’t do fringe either. Oh! If there were a plaid shirt with fringe, paired with, oh say, A HORRIFYING OWL PENDANT NECKLACE, it would just about be the scariest outfit of all time.
Haley says
Ahahaha! I hope you’ve recovered from the swimming owl video I posted on your FB timeline. Oh my. You just shouldn’t tell people you’re scared of owls. Because I’m tempted beyond what I can handle to share owl photos with you whenever they cross my path. What if there were little owls on the edge of every strand of fringe?
