Yup. I get to share a birthday with Our Lady. And that is cool.
AND, I get to share about my latest fix from Stitch Fix because it came this weekend! So help me decide what’s worth keeping. (And if you want to know the deal with Stitch Fix and whether it’s worth it I’ve written about all that. And if you want a thrifty alternative, you can learn about that, too. Ok…on with the show.)
Item #1: Beasley Stud Detailed Short Sleeve Knit Shirt (Evolution by Cyrus) I’ve been needing some comfortable short sleeved shirts to wear with jeans that don’t have holes in them or grease stains (remind me to wear an apron when I cook my daily bacon.) I love the color and the detailing on the sleeves and it’s super soft. It also looks like it could transition into maternity or be a good piece for a postpartum wardrobe. (I’m not pregnant, folks. Just thinking’ ahead.)
Daniel’s take: “I like the buttons on the arms. It seems super relaxed.”
Item #2: Tracey Bold Chevron Print Maxi Skirt (Gilli) You may recall that I have bad luck with maxis. I asked for a maxi skirt awhile back and SF sent me two, but neither worked out. The first one was tie dye and just….no thanks. And then the second one was too snug around my middle and hips. So I thought maybe maxis just weren’t for me because I’m so short, but I like this one! I think it works!
Daniel’s take: “It looks like it’s one of those optical illusions tricks. Is it moving?”
Item #3: Emer High Waisted Cropped Trouser (Margaret M) Ok, y’all. I’m just not professional enough to own pants like this. The fit is fine, but the fabric doesn’t feel good and I just don’t know when I would wear them. And they’re pricey. I’d rather have jeans.
Daniel’s Take: “Those are like business casual. No! OFFICE casual. But you don’t go to an office so…..somethin’ to think about.”
Now it’s about to get crazy! Items 4 and 5 are styled TWO ways. I know. WOW. I guess you could say I’m getting the hang of these fashion posts…except for the unbelievably awkward poses….and lack of….fashion…know how. Ok. Onward.
Item #4: Breyson Pleat Detail Sleeveless Knit Top (41Hawthorn) I like this one. It’s nice and long which is good for girls like me who would prefer to wear leggings all day, everyday. Super soft, comfy and good for Florida weather. And, like Item #1 would be a versatile piece during pregnancy and the aftermath.
Daniel’s Take: “I guess it’s pretty crazy how different style gets when you add belts.”
Item #5: Mattia Chain Print Mixed Material V-Neck Blouse (41Hawthorne) Good grief, Haley. Learn how to pose. I can’t handle my own awkwardness. Ok, moving on. I like this one. That’s all I got here.
Daniel’s Take: “It’s like your shirt is channeling an 80s female standup comedienne.” What?
Now it’s your turn to give your take, friends. I’m leaning toward NOT keeping the black pants for offices I don’t hang out in. Otherwise….I’m really not sure here.
Don’t forget to tell me what to keep from Stitch Fix in the comments! (P.S. that’s my affiliate link. Thank ya, kindly!)
Teresa says
I like items 1 and 2 the best!
Haley says
Me, too!
ladyjane says
#1 is really cute. My favorite is #2! I love maxi skirts and that one is marvelous on you!
(Also, YAY daily bacon!)
Haley says
Thanks!
How Roode says
Definitely keep items #2 and #4! No on #3, Maybe on #1 and #5, depending on whether you like the price. 🙂
Haley says
I’m thinking no on #3 and #5….Def #1 and #2 and maybe #4. Decisions!
Rebekka says
Nr 1: i like the neckline and shoulders but what’s going on with the hem? Is that ruching? Since the fabric is so drapey it shows the buttons on your jeans, I’m thinking wear it with leggings or a skirt, or you look bunchy on the bottom.
Nr 2: IMO it makes you look broad around the middle.
Nr 3: I actually like these but if they are uncomfortable don’t do it. Life is too short for uncomfortable clothes!
Nr 4&5: keepers.
Rebekka says
Also if you look on the blog cashmerette, which is a plus sized sewing blog, there’s a semi recent post with some really good tips for taking pictures of clothes incl posing, not that yours are so bad.
Haley says
Oh cool! Thanks!
Amanda says
I don’t like the last shirt. The pants aren’t bad, but don’t get em if you wont wear em. The rest really fit you, even the maxi.
I am glad you wear leggings as pants. I am really tempted to but it always feels inappropriate. But, it doesn’t look inappropriate on you at all- so maybe I am afraid of people being judge-y for no reason?
Haley says
I love them under short dresses and long tunic shirts! I figure if my bum is all covered up, then we’re probably ok 😉
Amy @ Motherhood and Miscellany says
Happy Birthday!!! My favorite is the maxi skirt. It looks beautiful on you, and I’ve recently discovered the beauty of the maxi skirt myself (it’s like yoga pants but fancy). My two cents 🙂
I hope you have a GREAT birthday.
P.S. Totally unrelated, but I just started planning my very first Michaelmas party!
Haley says
Thanks, Amy! And YAY for Michaelmas!
Katie says
I like #2 and 4 the best! No for #3 esp if you won’t wear them. And I like 1&5, just depends on how much you want to spend I think!
Katie says
And happy birthday!!
Haley says
Thanks!
Liz Underhay says
I like #4and 5! Daniel is cracking me up. I’m not sure about #2, but I don’t think I’m good at fashion. 😛 Also, I’m glad that Im not the only one who thinks about if I will still be able to wear something for a while if I become pregnant! 🙂
Haley says
Daniel is cracking me up, too 😉
Amy says
I like #1, 2, and 5, but I have to admit I’m letting “my style” influence my choices. 🙂 I also like the black pants but wouldn’t buy them either if they were not comfortable. I don’t think you look awkward in your photos! You look great.
Amy says
Ugh, I meant to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I hope you have a great one. 🙂
Haley says
Aw, thanks so much, Amy!
Colleen says
I can help you with the grease stains from bacon cooking (and it will even work after the item has been washed)! Just take some regular white chalk, color in the grease stain and let it sit for a couple of hours. Then just wash it again! The chalk absorbs the grease right out of the fabric and washes away — I’ve never had it not work, even if it took two rounds. MAGIC!
Haley says
I have never heard that! I will try it! Thank you, Colleen.
KelleyAnnie @ Over the Threshold says
I’m a fan of all but the maxi-skirt and pants. The pants look fine, but if you won’t wear them…and I’m just not into the chevron print on the skirt. One thing to consider though is that all 3 new shirts are blue–do you have a lot of blue? Does that matter to you? Just sayin’… 🙂
Haley says
Eh, I actually don’t have much blue. I have mostly black, brown, and green. But I think you’re right. I won’t get ALL of them because that’s probably more blue than my wardrobe needs.
Karla says
I thoroughly enjoy your posts– from the deepest spiritual questions to the fun and frivolity of posts such as these. It seems this time Stitch Fixed hit it right. I also think all the tops and dresses look suited to you and flattering. The last top is unique and maybe not something you would have naturally picked– but if you FEEL comfortable in the fabric and style, it uniquness could turn it Into a favorite.
Haley says
Thanks, Karla! I’m having second thoughts about the color/pattern of the last shirt. The fabric is comfy but…I dunno. I think I’ll send it back :/
Beth (A Mom's Life) says
My feelings are mixed on the maxi skirt. It makes you look like are very wide in the waist. Perhaps it just needs a different top…maybe one that’s tight fitting and not tucked in.
I dig everything else in the box though!
And you need to be baking your bacon. Put your bacon on a cookie sheet and stick it in a cold oven. Turn the oven to 400 degrees and set the timer for 15 minutes. If you like your bacon floppy it will be done . If you like it crispy, leave it in for a couple of more minutes! No bacon grease to spatter on you while frying!! So good and so easy because you can do other things while it’s cooking!
Haley says
I’ll give that a try! Thanks!
Kinga says
#1, #2 and #5 !
Erin says
If it were me, I would keep only items 1 and 5. You look great in all of it though!
My box is coming today! I can hardly wait!
Haley says
Ooo, yay! I hope you get good stuff!
Alicia says
I really like 1, 2, and 4. The maxi is a fun pattern and neutral, so you could wear it with practically any solid-color shirt. And both shirts 1 and 4 look nice, although I did realize that at least in pictures they look the same color. So, if you’re looking for more wardrobe variety, you may want to just pick one?
Haley says
I agree completely!
Trista says
Happy birthday!
#1: I like the cap sleeve top. It seems to work with your style.
#2: This maxi skirt is SO much better than the tie dyed one. B&W is so versatile for combining with different tops.
#3: Don’t underestimate basic black trousers that fit well. I wore mine to Mass yesterday with a tee shirt and infinity scarf. They are just as easy to dress up or down as jeans. If you don’t think you’ll wear them, send them back. But, give ’em a fair shot if they actually fit well.
#4: The aqua tank top is so similar in color to the cap sleeve top, that I might not keep it. It looks good with a belt, but looks a bit baggy without.
#5: I like the cut, shape, and print of the tunic, but I’m not crazy about the contrasting sleeves. From a distance it looks like a vest.
Haley says
I didn’t think of that with #5, but I think you’re right!
Francine says
Happy birthday!! I like items #1 and 2 the best!
Haley says
Thanks, Francine!
Liesl says
Happy Birthday!!!!
Definitely keep the maxi and item #5!
I like the other two shirts that you like – my only thing is that they look the same color? I try to limit myself to not getting the same color in different styles just because I tend to wear one of them way more than the other. Otherwise they look great!
Haley says
Thanks, Liesl!
Sharon Morrison says
Lovin’ items #1, 2 and 5!
Amy Z says
To be honest I was going to say buy it all because I really like all of it on you, but I definitely concur with the others; if the black pants are an uncomfortable fabric and you can’t see yourself wearing them, definitely do not get them. Love #1, those are my favorite kind of shirts and they work great for different seasons of life. Love the skirt, if you don’t keep it, send it my way ;). I’ve also searched on Pinterest for maxi skirt outfits and have found some really helpful pictures on how to style them for different weather seasons and seasons of life. #4 love the belt and heels, it adds balance to the outfit. Without it you look disproportional (long on top), but around the house it’s fine. I like it. I like #5 styled both ways! Happy birthday!
Haley says
Thanks, Amy! Great advice!
Erin says
Happy Birthday! I really love the shirt (#5) and I think the maxi skirt is flattering, and a good pattern on you. I am really meh on maxi skirts myself, I think they can turn frumpy very fast depending on what kind of top you pair them with. However, I think you styled it well! Those teal shirts are just kind of OK. I have had a lot of that with StitchFix (getting OK kinds of tops but nothing AWESOME). And the pants, if you don’t like em don’t get em! I am all about the jeans too!!
Haley says
Yup, I think if I keep the pants, I’ll still always reach for my jeans so….just doesn’t seem worth it to keep ’em 🙂
Amy says
Love the tops…..but I must say that what caught my eye was your sandals. 😉 LOVE them!!
Haley says
Aw, thanks, Amy! Target. I got a pair in black and a pair in brown and I’ve worn them everyday all summer 🙂
Stephanie says
Happy birthday! I’d love to see a closeup of your ink!
Haley says
I do a closeup of the tattoo in this video, Stephanie! http://carrotsformichaelmas.com/2014/08/21/ask-me-anything-vlog-part-i-wes-anderson-my-tattoo-and-how-we-discipline/
Janina says
At work, so this is quick…lol…I liked #1(totally comfy, totally transitional to-from and in-between babies), 2 (CUTE! You pull it off well), 4(maybe…depending on cost. Didn’t “wow” me), 5(You really look cute in this and pull it off well, especially with the scarf).
Just 2cents 🙂 Love me some stitch fix!
Janina says
AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀
Haley says
Thanks, Janina!
Emily says
Definitely yes on #1, maybe on #4. I would definitely send the others back. The maxi skirt takes away your waist/hips, and draws attention away from your face. And the #5 shirt doesn’t seem to have any shape and reminds me of tent maternity shirts that women wore in the early 80’s. But that first shirt is wonderful!
Haley says
Good advice, Emily!
Sheena says
I love them all except number 5.
Genevieve says
Five is my fav!
Jess C says
My favorite is #1, but I also like #s 2 and 5. Definite no on #3 if you don’t think you’ll wear them! This box was all pretty great 🙂
Happy Birthday!
Haley says
Thanks, Jess!
Sadie says
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I LOVE the skirt! That and the last shirt are my favs…..don’t get the pants.
Haley says
Thanks, Sadie!
Laura says
My vote is #2!!!
Kaitlin @ More Like Mary says
The skirt looks great on you! You will quickly LOVE maxis and never go back. I like all the tops except the last one. I can see you never wearing it even though you like it. (although then it might end up in a clothing exchange…….)
Haley says
I think you’re right, Kaitlin. I’m not gonna reach for that shirt and it’ll sit in my closet.
Juliana says
Item 1 is my favorite! Happy birthday!! 🙂
Haley says
Thanks, Juliana!
Laura says
Happy birthday!
I like #1, but I think you could get something similar for less than Stitch Fix generally charges. I like the #2 maxi skirt’s pattern, but I think it makes your torso look short. I would pair it with a different shirt and let the material balloon a little over the front.
#3, no. No reason for trousers if you’re not going to wear them!
#4, I like. It would be cute for a date night too! I would check the cleaning instructions on it. I have maybe two dry clean only shirts because seriously, I don’t have time for that and my baby will obliterate it.
#5, I would never have purchased for myself, but it looks absolutely adorable on you. Especially in the second photo with the scarf and leggings. You look like the “cool mom” at the coffee shop with whom I’d want to be besties.
Haley says
Thanks, Laura!
Diane says
Everything looks nice except the crazy chevron skirt.
Danielle Laird says
Look! I’m commenting! 😉
I vote for Items #1 and #5. The color on #1 is beautiful on you, and the cut is flattering. I don’t love the others as much…the maxi dress is closer to right, but not quite there. #5 is versatile, has nice style to it, and is flattering on you.
My husband and I had some conversations about getting the most out of Stitch Fix…i.e. to get the best value, you either buy one item (recoup your styling fee and get to keep *something*), or you keep it all, to get the 25% off discount. You might want to add up the cost of some different scenarios — if you buy it all, you might get the black pants for free, essentially!
Hope L and B get their letters soon! 🙂
Haley says
Oh good call about the one item or all items! And they got their letters today and LOVED them!
Kate @ The Rhodes Log says
These Stitch Fix posts ALWAYS get me. And now that you’ve started this Stitch Fix post trend, I’m finding so many more. And whenever I see one I’m like MUST CLICK NOW DINNER BE DAMNED.
So my two cents because you asked: 5, 4, and 1 – in that order – are my favorites. I’m going to have to agree with Daniel on the skirt. Once patterns go a little Escher I steer clear.
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Haley says
Thanks, Kate!
Lauren says
2, 4, 5! Happy birthday!
Haley says
Thanks, Lauren!
Kayla says
Happy birthday! Lucky you sharing one with Mary 🙂
I love that maxi skirt and all of the tops!
Haley says
Thanks! Such a lucky birthday! 😉
Amanda A. says
I love 1,2 and 4.
Lindsay says
Happy birthday! I think you solved the fancy-pants problem already. I love all of the shirts, but I’m with Daniel on the skirt. Either be a chevron or don’t, but there’s just too much going on to see beautiful you!
Vanessa Fletcher says
Ah! Love the skirt! I live in maxi skirts bc they some how look kinda dressy and nice even though they are super comfy and you don’t have to shave! I love your jewelry picks! So cute! I’m so glad my brother is still being SO helpful with fashion advice. He should be better by now bc I forced him into helping me!
Haley says
Haha! He’s something’ else 😉
Kim says
My favs are 2 and 4. I love the color of the shirt! And a skirt that fits like yoga pants? I might have to try that. Hope your birthday was grand!
Haley says
Thanks, Kim!
Chris says
I like #4 the best. The maxi skirt is cool, but that chevron pattern has so flooded the apparel world that I’d be hesitant to jump in now. There is a good chance that you’ll be sick of it in a year. Although, I know with the kiddos, you’ll be lucky if it lasts an hour before it has a few stains anyway.
Haley says
That’s true about the chevron being a trend. I don’t have anything with that print (I actually don’t have a lot of prints in general). Maybe I’ll just make it my wild card piece 😉
Chris says
In that case, the chevron skirt is probably a great way to add a little fun to your looks!
Joseph says
You should trademark the catch-phrase: “Onward and awkward!”
Happy birthday!!!1!
Haley says
Haha! Yes. I definitely should. Thanks, Joseph!
Steph says
Love the Maxi and shirt #5! I like one and three, too! Happy Birthday!
Cristina says
I loved and just returned #3 – the price? Ouch. But I’m in an office 5 days a week. Had I kept them, they would have worked in the office and those rare, but necessary date nights.
I’m a maxi gal, so I vote #2 fo’ sho’.
Michele says
I would keep all the shirts. The flowy look is so pretty on you, Haley!
Marie says
I know you said you aren’t professional enough for the pants, but they looked great on you and it might be worth your while to have one pair in your wardrobe that are dressier than your usual. Just because. But I totally understand if you don’t want to commit the money to something you won’t wear often. I didn’t like the maxi skirt a lot but again, it’s how you feel and what you will wear. Everything else looked great. I loved the blue blouse styled “fancy” with the black pants. You looked nicely dressed-up but in a way that was consistent with your overall style. Nice!!
AnneMcD says
Happy birthday! You also share it with my eldest and the day before me!
Alli says
Aw I wish I came across this post earlier so I could help choose but I really like the v-neck blouse for sure! How has your Stitch Fix experience been so far? 🙂 I want to give it a try but I’m still deciding among other online services so I would love to have your opinion!
Haley says
I really like SF, Alli! But I also like Golden Tote. I haven’t decided which one is my favorite yet! I did a little review of GT here if you want to check it out!: http://carrotsformichaelmas.com/2014/09/18/golden-tote-something-a-little-different-good-fashion-different/
Alli says
Omg that golden tote is way too cute and I really like the pieces you got too 🙂 Do you have any opinions on Vain Pursuit? It’s supposed to be similar but for skincare. Haha I’m too overwhelmed by all these services available!
Haley says
I’ve never tried Vain Pursuit. I’m actually really boring as skin care goes. I use regular soap on my face even though I know I’m not supposed to, haha. And then I call it a day 😉
Alli says
Haha, I’m the same but I decided to give their service a try! I’m really liking it so far. Their facial milk is heaven! Never knew my skin could be this soft 😛
