Mmm. So I promised I’d update ya on the Whole30 I said I was going to start. I’m on Day 8. (Basically, the Whole30 is thirty days of eating veggies, fruit, fat, and protein. No grains, no dairy, no sugar, no legumes, and no processed food. The guidelines are more specific, but that’s the main idea.)
And when I asked if anybody wanted to join me, I had NO IDEA more that 100 other folks would jump in and join the Carrots Whole30 FB group. So fun! It’s actually been incredibly helpful for me to have some accountability. And Jennifer Sands of Soul Meets Body Fitness and Chef Karen agreed to join us to answer all our questions. So…it’s been kinda fun.
How’s it going? Here’s my timeline so far:
Day 1: Typical Day
Day 2-3: Worst Headache Ever. Soooo sleepy.
Day 4-7: I feel great!
Day 8: Please let me go back to sleep. Also, send chocolate.
I don’t think that’s supposed to be the Day 8 experience. But it could just be that I didn’t get enough sleep the past couple of nights. But seriously. Nap time, please. And I have to get a filling at the dentist during kiddo nap time so…….waaaah!
Successes?
- I haven’t caved yet.
- Bacon is encouraged.
- I’m learning to drink my coffee black, so now I feel really tough and grown up.
And I can’t share all the details until the sale goes live September 10th, but there are some great resources for Whole30 meals in the Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle that our book, Feast!, is featured in. To give you a sense of how many awesome recipes are in this thing, check this out:
I’m actually trying out some recipes from one book in particular, but I can’t share titles until the sale…..so….just wait. I’m so excited about this!
AND, I’ll be throwing my first ever Carrots FB party next Wednesday night at 9:30pm-11pm EST to help answer questions about the sale and chat healthy livings with some fantastic giveaways! Basically, I though to myself, what would I want to win? So I’ve got items from chloe + isabel, Mama’s Notebooks, Toadily Handmade Beeswax Candles, and Young Living Essential Oils -from Olivia Spears. So put it on your calendar so I won’t be all by my lonesome with a bunch of prizes for the attendees!
In other news, Gwen found her old Bumbo and claimed it as a “reading” chair. It’s pretty cute, I gotta say.
And Benjamin is practicing counting to 100 with these Dot Art paint marker things that I didn’t know existed until last week but am eternally grateful for turning “painting time” at my house into something that doesn’t requires baths all around when it’s over. Yay!
The Quotable Benjamin:
Me: “I missed you when you were at Ooma’s house, buddy.”
Benjamin: “I missed you, too…..kinda.”
At least he’s…honest? 😉
I did something a little crazy this week (crazy for me, because I’m cheap) and hired a baby sitter for one afternoon so I could go and knock out some writing projects at a coffee shop. It’s amazing how much you can get done when you’re not also tending to three small children, amirite?! (Also, please note that cup of BLACK COFFEE. No cream, y’all. Feeling soooooo tough over here.)

They are the best!
Rachel @ Efficient Momma says
How do I join the Facebook party? I can’t figure it out lol
Haley says
Oh no! OK, when you click on the link, you should just be able to click “join” within the event. Did that work?
Mitzi says
Congratulations on reaching Day 8!!! That’s wonderful! I look forward to reading more about your experience with Whole30.
Haley says
Thanks, Mitzi! I’ll keep sharing 🙂
Melissa H-K says
Does no dairy mean no eggs? Because eggs seem like meat to me. Animal protein and all that. Which I looooove. 🙂
Haley says
Eggs are fine for this one, Melissa!
Elizabeth says
I find that I get really sleepy if I haven’t had enough protein for the day. Fruits and veggies are great, and I do love them, but if I don’t eat protein with every meal my milk supply plummets and I’m exhausted. You might keep an eye on your protein intake if you’re struggling with low energy.
Haley says
Good call!
Lindsay @ fueled by diet coke says
RedEye coffee is the ONLY COFFEE I’ve ever been able to stomach black. GO YOU!
Haley says
I am very smug about it!
Tammy says
Maybe you already know this or maybe it’s also not allowed in the Whole30 but coconut oil in my coffee has eliminated me needing sugar in it and sometimes the cream. But coffee + coconut oil is definitely way easier for me to drink than straight up black coffee.
Haley says
I do like the creaminess of the coconut oil, but I think the not dairy cream flavor throws me off too much. Maybe I’ll give it another try!
Amanda says
OH MY LOVE YOUR WALLPAPER!
I need to get another copy of Anne of Avonlea. I had it on VHS ages ago and lost it. Not that I have a VHS player anymore anyway, but…
Haley says
So good!
Lauren says
I heard that sound byte from Victoria Osteen a few days ago and it made me shudder. Thanks for the well thought-out rebuttal, appropriate for all Christians. I have respect for a wide variety of Christian views, but the need more earthly-things mentality is one I need to stay away from, not be encouraged towards.
Tacy says
I want to check out your fb profile. How do I do that?;)
Haley says
FB profile? The party event with the giveaways? Or the whole30 group?

Good luck on the whole30 thing! I’ve tried paleo but I just can’t get my kids off milk, and then I think “oh what’s the point” lol. I’ll hand them coconut or almond milk and they sip it and promptly hand it back so I can fix the mishap.
Haley says
Yeah, it’s a busy season right now so I am soooo not trying to make the kids do it with me. Daniel’s been making whole30 compliant breakfasts for everyone, I usually eat last night’s leftovers for lunch and make the kids something else. And then I cook dinner and the kids eat it, too. So I’m still giving them milk (Lucy, Benjamin and Gwen are intolerant) and just not worrying too much about it! 🙂 So hard to do it for everybody!
Lindsay {The Burke Book} says
I’m sorry if you’ve already answered this on the FB page, but could you share sample shopping lists (and maybe prices?) for your Whole30? I’m usually an “everything in moderation” kind of girl but find the idea of a Whole30 appealing. However, I only eat humanely-raised, no-antibiotics, etc etc meat, which is crazy-expensive (goodness that sounds pretentious). So I can only afford to eat meat once or twice a week, and can’t imagine how I could afford to do a Whole30. If you’ve solved this problem is love to hear about it!
Haley says
I haven’t shared that, but it’s a great idea! We only eat meat once or twice a week, too, so it’s WEIRD having tons of meat in the fridge. I ended up spending about 30 dollars more per week than usual at the store. But I should share more specifics and save my receipt next time so I can explain in detail!

Heads up on the dot markers. 2 year olds can apparently get the tops off and spill the liquid ink. Or maybe I just have a mess making overachiever?
