My 12 Favorite Carrots Posts of 2012

Happy New Year! Since sharing which 10 posts were the most popular with my readers in 2012, I realized that almost none of my favorite posts made the list! My 10 Books You Must Read to Your Daughter post (viewed almost 200,000 times this year!) came together in an hour. Go figure, right? But some of my posts are the result of days (or weeks) of reflection. Here’s a few posts that really came from my heart and soul this year:

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 26

Coming Up in the Liturgical Year: Tomorrow (Saturday) is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and…I get to share her birthday! Did I choose a good day to be born, or what?

In the Garden:

Baby broccoli and brussel sprouts!

The Quotable Benjamin:

I did NOT lose my privilege because privileges aren’t a thing.”  -Benjamin, logician (grammarian?)

I’m gettin’ old and forgetful.”

(When Lucy was destroying a lego creation) “Lucy! NO! You’re….you’re….you’re just being Mister Naughty Girl!” (I’m grateful that the meanest thing he could think of to say.)

Instagrams Worth Sharing (I’m haleyweasley if you would like to follow me):

Date night at a farm to table restaurant! Daniel’s parents give us the amazing gift of childcare every Friday evening so we can have a date night. Since we’ve been practicing ecological breastfeeding, it’s just been recently that I’ve been separated from Lucy for more than an hour at a time, so she just started joining Benjamin for special night at “Ooma” and “Oompa”s. Dinner just the two of us. Amazing, yes? Don’t hate me for having the best in-laws ever.

Dinosaurs are surprisingly snuggly.

I am so in love with this beautiful rosary made by Melanie of Trendy Traditions.  It has green glass beads with roses for the Our Fathers and small white pearl accents. The crucifix and center are hand cast from an antique rosary. And it has Benjamin, Lucy, and Daniel’s names on the middle three decades.

Happy Friday! Looking forward to a fun birthday weekend with family! Daniel and I might even go see a…wait for it….movie. Has anybody seen Moonrise Kingdom? I love Wes Anderson films and I haven’t seen it, yet. I also haven’t been to a movie since……..Harry Potter 7.2? Do people still go to the movies?

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 24

Whew. What a week! A runny nose for our little asthmatic Benjamin turned into a relentless cough and a high fever sending him on a couple visits to the pediatrician and many, many breathing treatments at home. And I don’t know if you’re aware of that fun cough-induced vomiting trick some kids do, but if it was an Olympic sport, Benjamin would win a gold medal. Not to be outdone by big brother, Lucy decided to wake almost every hour three nights in a row. So we’re worn out over here.

It truly breaks my heart when my kids are sick. So many days I wish Benjamin could just sit still for one second, stop talking for one minute, and not ask for snacks constantly. But, when he’s a little pathetic lethargic lump of toddler sitting quietly and feverishly on the couch refusing to eat, all I want is my wild, crazy, hungry boy back. Except for a little congestion and cough he seems back to normal and we’re so glad!

Coming Up in the Liturgical Year: Next week are the feast days of two of my favorite saints: St. Augustine and St. Monica! Last week we feasted and celebrated the Queenship of Our Lady.

Daniel outdid himself with a feast fit for a queen: Rosemary Sage Pork Tenderloin, Baked Potatoes, and my favorite side dish of all time: Whiskey-Glazed Carrots!

It was also St. Rose of Lima’s day yesterday. Did you do anything to celebrate Our Lady or St. Rose last week?

In the Garden: Okra, Green Peppers, Banana Peppers! Check out this fried okra alongside a southern feast compliments of Daniel including local sausage, onions, and swiss chard over grits. Mmmmm!:

The weeds are OUT OF CONTROL and we’ve started pulling things out to prep for our Fall garden. What’s growing in your garden?

The Most Important Post Partum Skill: Nursing Lying Down: Mama and Baby Love (This is so true! I didn’t get the hang of this with Benjamin but I loved nursing lying down with Lucy and nursed in this position whenever we were at home for the first 5 or 6 months because it was most comfortable for both of us.)

How to Take Great Pictures of Kids: SlowMama (I wish I could take a photography class, but in the meantime these are some good tips.)

The Quotable Benjamin:

I’m talking to Daddy on Gchat. He says, ‘I’m just eatin’ up my work snacks and pushing lots of computer buttons and I’ll be right home! And we’ll eat dinner and have a family movie night and take a bath and read books and go to bed!‘” – Benjamin
I love imagining what he thinks Daddy does at work.

Is Jesus like a magical man?!” – Benjamin (apparently my three-year-old’s Christology isn’t as great as I thought it was)

Instagrams Worth Sharing: (I’m haleyweasley if you want to follow me)

Before and After I gave Benjamin a haircut. Sweet boy.

What is it, you ask? Why, Benjamin’s “lizard house” of course.

This girl. I can’t get enough of her. She’s doing a lot of standing by herself so we know that first step is just around the corner. And in less than 8 weeks we’ll be celebrating our Bright Star’s first birthday (on the Feast of Bl. John Paul II!). If she would just decide to sleep through the night, she would be the world’s most perfect baby.

Some weeding, some reading, and some sleeping and recovering is what’s on the menu for us this weekend. What’re your weekend plans?

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 22

Happy Friday! To those of you who promoted and pledged to the East Hill Honey kickstarter project, thank you, thank you, thank you! They made their goal just in time! Bees! Local Farmers! Sustainability! Win!

In the Garden:

Look at the beauty that greeted us in the garden when we arrived home! I want to grow sunflowers always. Forever!

Lots of banana peppers! Also chili peppers, jalapenos, and bell peppers. Mmmmm.

Reading:

Hands down, my favorite thing about vacation is getting a chance to READ. On our trip, I finished the lengthy, but amazing Sword of Honour Trilogy by Evelyn Waugh (my favorite novelist). Funny, poignant, and very Catholic, like Brideshead Revisited, my all-time favorite novel. It was set during WWII and the plot primarily turns within a military setting. I have a hard time getting into war stuff (books, films, etc) so the fact that I polished off a 700+ page novel about WWII points to it’s brilliance. But if you’ve never read Waugh,  start with Brideshead. IT IS THE BEST.

I also re-read G.K. Chesterton’s masterful Orthodoxy. This is a must-read. If you haven’t read this fine work of Christian thought yet, you’re in for a treat. Chesterton is just so hilarious and so TRUE. I enjoyed just as much the second (third?) time as I did the first.

What are you reading these days?

The Quotable Lucy:

We’re taking a break from Benjamin’s usual hilarious antics to celebrate Lucy’s blossoming language acquisition. The rental we stayed in on vacation housed some pretty impressive taxidermy. Or at least Lucy was impressed enough to start saying, “De-ah!”

Pictures Worth Sharing:

Lightsaber battles with Daddy are WAY more fun than unpacking on a dark and stormy night.

My, she’s swell.

Lucy mastered the finer points of peekaboo on our road trip.

When We Were Away: A Photo Post

Today I wanted to share some pictures of our 12 day trip to the Carolinas. These I took with my real camera, but I’ll probably sneak some of my instagrams (haleyweasley) from the week in Friday’s This Week’s Miscellany. I’m still catching up on emails, comments, etc., so if you haven’t heard back from me, it’s not because I don’t think you’re grand! I’ll get back to you soon, promise!

On our trip we relaxed, read, enjoyed extended family, watched Olympics, and took lots of walks so Benjamin could find salamanders in the creek bed and Lucy could spot deer (or “de-ah!”). Other than feeling a little crummy from a cold/cough that I haven’t quite gotten over, it was wonderful.

It was so fun to be all together with no schedule or obligations. Benjamin didn’t even want to come home.

“I’m keeping my eyes open for deer, flowers, and blackberries!”

These sweet loves! They were such good little travelers.

Although they had their moments…”I am NOT in time out!”

B loved getting to have Daddy around to play with all day every day.

I think Daniel enjoyed it, too :)

Lucy watching the otters play with Daddy and Grandaddy.

Mr. Big Brown Eyes was digging all the vacation treats.

And this little gal stole everyone’s heart.

“Are we on vacation?!” he asked us each morning.

And if I have to say goodbye to crisp mountain air and suffer through August in Florida, at least I’ve got my precious ones to keep me company :)

You can check out pics of our mountain trip last year with a smaller Benjamin and a bigger me (pregnant with Miss Lucy) if you wanna. And I have a new post up at Mama and Baby Love: 5 Essential Newborn Items. It’s my minimalist’s guide to simple baby gear. Enjoy!

Did you take any sort of vacation this year?

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 21

We’re still up in the mountains escaping the Florida heat and enjoying some time with extended family. I know it’s been pretty quiet ’round these parts, but I hope you enjoyed Katherine’s non-maternity “maternity” picks and my must-have maternity items that can be used during the post-partum weeks, too.  Here’s a  short This Week’s Miscellany and I’ll be back in full force next week :) (You can follow the rest of our trip by following me on instagram. I’m haleyweasley.)

and Food Choices Are Not a Moral Issue: Keeper of the Home (I definitely disagreed with this post. Although, I think it’s important to be understanding and not unkind or judgmental towards those who don’t share your real, local, and/or organic food choices, I think food IS DEFINITELY a moral issue. There’s no need to be smug or holier-than-thou because of your food choices, but let’s not pretend that they aren’t important and that there’s not so much at stake. Not only are we supposed to take care of the bodies God gave us, but we MUST consider the moral implications of who grows our food, how animals are treated, how farmers and farm workers are treated, how our food is grown, how it affects our environment, how much gas is used to transport food, etc. For some food for thought (hehe) I highly recommend Wendell Berry’s agrarian essays and Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal, Vegetable, Miracle.

The Quotable Benjamin:

Benjamin: “Wait…WHO is WHO’S father?!”
Me: “Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father. Can you believe that?”
Benjamin: “Noooooooooo!”

“The storm troopers in Star Wars are really bad. They want to break stuff and even cut up bedspreads with scissors!”

“Mama, I will always love you. No matter what. Even if you poked an eye out.” (Well, that’s a relief, amirite?!)

“I want to go to a zoo with Tauntauns. Call ALL the zoos!”

Benjamin: Are lightsabers real?
Daniel: No son, I’m sorry. They’re not. At least, not like in the movies.
Benjamin: No, they ARE real. They sell them at Target.

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 20

Happy Friday! It was a long week of teething for Miss Lucy (AKA no sleep for mama), but some summer fun as well (like the homemade Bubble Tea Benjamin and I have been enjoying). And my second post is up at Mama and Baby Love about How to Cook with Bacon Grease (And Why You Should!). So, head over there to hear me gab about how much I love bacon.

Coming Up in the Liturgical Year: The Feast of St. Anne and St. Joachim next Thursday, July 26th! St. Anne’s Feast is my brother’s birthday as well as my dear friend and maid of honor’s birthday. And since our conversion, St. Anne has become more and more special to me. I especially ask for her intercession for friends who desire to conceive. Check out the feast we had last year to celebrate the parents of Our Lady and grandparents of Our Lord.  Mussels, mmmm. Pray for us, St. Anne and St. Joachim!

In the Garden:

Tons of hot peppers and finally……OKRA! Be still my heart!

Our very first sunflower ever!

Squash blossoms! Stuffed with fresh herbs, garlic, and cream cheese then battered in Daniel’s homebrew and fried. Mmmmm.

“Because I’m made of snips and snails and puppy-dog tails!”

Pictures Worth Sharing:

Do you have yogurt on your nose, Lucy?

Yup.

This girl is happiest when she’s close to big brother.

Thanks for letting me share a little about our week :)

I hope you have a splendid weekend! Last night we had a special birthday dinner for my brother and tonight we’re celebrating Daniel’s sister’s birthday. Do you have anything special planned this weekend?

This Week’s Miscellany: Vol. 19

Big night ahead! D and I are going to see Les Mis at a local highschool (first date without Lucy tagging along!). So I’ll post this quick because I have to go get all dolled up :)

In the Garden:

Bell peppers! Tomatoes! Green Beans!

Flowers from Benjamin. I will be so sad if this little boy outgrows picking flowers for his mama.

Giveaway Winner and an Imminent Hair Cut

And the winner of the Catholic Family Gifts children’s book giveaway is…Molly of Molly Makes Do! Congrats, Molly! Email or FB message me your address, and I’ll mail you your  book. Thank you, Catholic Family Gifts for sponsoring this great giveaway!

And now, friends. I need help. It’s been too long since I got a hair cut and I’m about to schedule one BUT…I’m still trying to decide how to get it cut. If you don’t want to hear me blather about my hair conundrum, feel free to stop reading now. I promise to have something more interesting tomorrow (I’m finally posting our conversion story). Ye have been warned…

So, right now it’s looooong. Longer than I can ever remember having my hair. Furthermore, my pregnancies have made my previously stick straight hair some sort of wavy inbetweeny nonsense that I don’t know how to style. And Florida is humid so it gets frizzy and I’m clueless as to how to use product with long hair. If I take the time to actually straighten it, it looks like this:

But I NEVER EVER take the time to do that. As in, I haven’t straightened it ONCE since I got it cut months ago and my stylist straightened it. If I leave it wavy, it looks like this:

It’s nice to be able to mix it up and do french braids:

Or maiden braids (photo by Jade Pierce Photography):

Or a ballerina bun:

Or Downton Abbey hair:

But:

I feel like I’m shedding constantly and it’s gross.

All I ever do is put it up. Really. I never ever ever wear it down.

So, I’m leaning towards chopping it all off and having short hair (which is what I had all through college). And my hair grows super fast so it wouldn’t take long for it be shoulder-length if I wanted to grow it out again. This is the style I’m thinking about:

Short, blondish, and easy to style with a teensy bit of product.

But….

When I get pregnant I gain 50-60 pounds and pine for some length (thankfully, breastfeeding makes me lose it all pretty quickly). But for some reason I think longer hair looks better when I have chubby pregnant face. And since we don’t try to avoid pregnancy, it’s likely that I’ll be up to my old pregnant weight gaining tricks soon and wishing I had longer hair. But then again…maybe I’ll just gain 25 lbs like a normal person next time around. Who can say?

Advise me, O, brilliant ones!

By the sea…

To celebrate my sweet mum’s 60th birthday, we went on a little trip to the ocean to eat at a restaurant built over the water (because it was a dry county in days past). We haven’t been there since the building was rebuilt after being destroyed in a hurricane. Now, why you would want to build your restaurant in the exact same place it recently fell into the ocean in a state that gets hurricanes at least once a year is beyond me…but, it IS a lovely spot. Benjamin has only seen the ocean once before so he was thrilled about the whole idea.

(Benjamin and Grandaddy looking at the water)

(Birthday Girl and Baby Girl)

And now, get ready, because I think this is our first family picture since Lucy was born. (I think maybe there’s a picture of the four of us from last winter but she was fast asleep in the sling, so I’m not sure that counts…):

I’m quite a lucky gal.
